Review for My Newborn Cloth Diapering

Baby Iqbal was around 7lbs at birth and when we started cloth diapering, he was already at 9lbs. The one size (OS) cloth diapers still looks a little bit bulky to us so we used the traditional square white flats as a start with newborn size diaper covers. The flats were those I used 25 years ago along with my other siblings, so you can imagine how thin and small it got! Hehe! We only use cloth diaper during the day, change him every 2-3 hours or less if Dear Son (DS) poops and also do daily washing.

System 1: 2 Baby Beehind (newborn size) covers and 9 traditional lampins/ flats
  • The covers are easily soiled and wet
  • The edge of the covers usually get dirty with blowouts
  • Few leaks (urine) mainly because the flats is super soaked
  • The covers did not give red marks on his thighs
I must say that I'm really glad I bought these newborn size covers. We only used the covers for 2+ weeks if I am not mistaken as we are getting more leaks and of course, he outgrew the covers. Performance wise, this system usually lasts Baby Iqbal for 1 hour max and he gets diaper rash too from the wetness. *sighs*

System 2: Bummis Super Brite and Baby Beehind (small size) with Flip inserts

  • This combination lasts for 2-3 hours
  • The front flap (in Bummis) is usually wet - I have a baby boy = front wetter
  • Changed the whole thing when Baby had blowouts
  • Leaked few times from the side (because I was using the flats and had it more than 1 hour)
Overall, I do not like the plastic-ky feel I get from Bummis diaper cover and the red marks from the elastics. But I like the leg gusset (although I think we'll be fine without it. Baby's blowouts didnt usually leak but always get to the edges of the covers soiled). I like BBH cover as it does not give Baby red marks on his thighs. However, it is not wipeable and sometimes I can smell urine from the cover. Both covers have a very strong aplix/velcro. We are still using the covers occasionally as extra cover for the day (now Baby is almost 3 months old).

What I learned from these systems

I need MORE than just two newborn covers. Sometimes okay, I can say almost every day, Baby Iq soiled all his diaper covers with his blowouts so there was more than one washing in a day (but it was a quick wash and quick drying time too, so I didn't really mind!). I read that Thirties XS cover is an excellent choice (it has leg gusset and CUTE!!! ;p). I might want to try using prefold next time. *giggles* Also for a trimmer diaper, I might want to try Flip newborn insert too. And get one or two newborn size diaper for going out. Okay, I better stop. I am not done cloth diapering one baby and here I am talking about having the next one. Lol! *:P *putting these in my wishlist*

Unfortunately, this is not a thorough review. I am not good at this yet (will try to improve them as I need to find my own way to make the review). I do hope those who are looking for this review will find the above information suffice. Happy cloth diapering! *:D

covers are being kept safely now

Baby Iqbal turns 3 months

Baby Iqbal made his first appearance to most of my relatives at my cousin's wedding today. Everyone loves baby! Aww~ *:D Who doesn't right? Babies are really adorable and cute!!!

It was a challenge to deal with his grumpiness after being held by many people (or maybe after seeing a lot of people for the first time). He was actually sleeping not long after we arrived at the hall. I was amazed that the loud music and people chattering did not bother his sleep. I guess he was really sleepy then. Preparing his stuffs was not hard either as we are only going out for few hours. I did put him on cloth diaper! *wink* Success!

Let's see his developmental milestone (so far),

  • He's still on fully breastfeed - every two to two and a half hours during the day, three hours at night. After midnight he can goes up to 4-5 hours of sleeping. He even snores! *lol*
  • His sleeping patterns are now rather consistent throughout the day, 2 hours of sleep and 2 hours of awake (or less sometimes). He sleeps more after 6pm which is not good because that will make him stays awake until midnight and refuses to go to sleep if he is not tired. Huhu
  • He is still on part time cloth diapering. Most of the time he is on cloth. At the moment, we are battling with diaper rash. *sighs* I find bepanthen to work like wonders than CJ BuTTer which is CD friendly.
  • He is now able to wake up/ sit (with help) from laying down. He's always fascinates by colours (especially cartoons! I show him 15-30mins of TV time in the afternoon). Also, he likes to play with his hands and feet! Hehe too cute!
  • His neck support is still soft. He barely can sits straight up! He's almost there I guess. We have tried to put him in his walker (put pillow in front of him for support) and he can moves backward! *giggles*
  • He still refuses to have tummy time. What we usually do to encourage him is to put him on his tummy for 5mins at least daily or until he cries. Sometimes I put him on my tummy as well.
  • When he sees people eating, he'll make us feel guilty for not giving him food. Or maybe he's just wondering what are we eating that he's not able to eat just yet! Hehhe
  • Witnessed his first loud laugh! "Haha!" *lol* That was really funny and unfortunately it's sort of a one time thing. Pfft! We want to hear it again.. Lucky we caught it on video! ;)
  • He likes to talk a lot these days. Husband will talks to him during night time if Baby is not asleep. My parents like to rock him to sleep early night. So yea..
His sleeping pattern at night is not like other babies. Owl baby I must say, noticed this when I was pregnant. Need to work on his daily schedule asap!

It has been a wonderful three months experience with Baby Iqbal around. We're excited to see what else he's ready to do and surprise us!

HAPPY 3 MONTHS OLD DEAREST SON! Semoga menjadi anak yang soleh dan beriman, penyayang dan penyabar, sentiasa sihat dahn diberkati Allah SWT di dunia dan di akhirat. Aminnn~

2 months appointment

Mon, 13th Feb. Baby Iqbal went to the clinic for his two months old Doctor's appointment. We did the usual once we arrived at the clinic, checked his weight - 6.04kgs and height 60.5cm (while the nurse measured his head circumference 21cm). Those are his numbers one week before Baby is three months old. When the Doctor checked him, everything is good. Alhamdulillah.. They told me to continue breastfeeding him. Insya Allah for as long as I can, I will.

Tue, 14th Feb. Husband left for Kuching. This time he will be away for 4 days and 3 nights. Baby Iqbal and I (along with my dad, sister and brother) sent Husband to the airport. It was Baby Iqbal first trip to the airport. Well, other than Birau, he has not been anywhere else actually. Hehe kesian..

Alhamdulillah, Baby Iqbal and I survived our first night together. Usually his dad will put him to sleep at night. Without Daddy around, I tried my very best last night and luckily Baby Iqbal inda mengusut. He was fast asleep last night after few short surah I read to him. We have two more nights to go. Let's be strong, Ef!

Oh! Today Baby Iqbal and Iman skyped and I actually cried the whole skyping session. Such a baby! I really need to be strong. :( *breathe in, breathe out* I am a supermom! *prays*

Breastfeeding Journey

I must say, it was a difficult beginning. I could not make Baby Iqbal latch within 30 mins after his birth. I know, it is recommended to do so! When we stayed at the hospital, I could not even breastfeed him (I wasn't strong enough although I have the support) so the nurses had to top up with formula milk. I knew that at that time his stomach is still tiny, I prayed that he is still content with the little amount I produced.

We had to give him formula milk even when we were at home. I tried to pump on our second and last day in the hospital. We showed it to the nurse because the colostrum that I produced were somehow brownish reddish, so we wasn't sure if we can give it to Baby Iqbal. The nurses were unsure and DH and I, and my families were really concerned if the mixture included blood.

When I had my BP appointment at Day Care Unit a week after, mom's friend kindly taught me how to breastfeed Baby Iqbal properly and just let him drink the brownish reddish milk I produced which happened to be my colostrum. She said maybe I had too much of chocolate drink while I was pregnant. Truthfully speaking, hot chocolate has always been my breakfast drink =.='

So that's how my breastfeeding journey began. Alhamdulillah, it has been two months I have been able to fully breastfeed Baby Iqbal. I am taking fenugreek pills to boost my milk production (okay, that sounds like a cow! hehehe ;p) I have not stock EBM (except if we are going out leavin him) but I am more worried if I suddenly get called for a job. I really need to start stocking up my milk supplies. Insya Allah, I'd want to breastfeed Baby Iqbal for as long as I can. Aminnnn~ *:D

One month of Cloth Diapering

Yay! Alhamdulillah :D

I have managed to cloth diaper Baby Iqbal for a month now. From buying 6 packs to 4 packs to 2 packs of disposable in a month. I am determined to make it into 1 pack and then, to ZERO. :D

So far, I've managed to cloth diaper Baby Iqbal throughout the day when we are home (which is everyday except Sunday when we are at my in-laws' place). Baby Iqbal has outgrew his newborn stash and currently, we are using the Flip diapers and occasionally the other diapers I recently have bought.

We began with 3 Flip covers and 4 inserts and now, we have 6 covers and 15 inserts. Baby Iqbal usually uses 2-3 covers daily, 6-8 inserts as we use them until almost midnight - his last diaper change. I wash the cloth diapers daily (and sometimes my dad will help as he cannot stand seeing the inserts in the pail). *Thank you Dad but really, you shouldn't have*

It is important (at least for me!) to have a sufficient stash so I can rotate the usage to make sure that these investment will last long. After all, one of the benefits of using cloth diaper is to save money. So it is good if we can use these diapers for multiple babies - well, 2 babies at least or 3 babies if you have lots of stash to rotate and keep them in a good condition.

That being said, YES I have increased my (read, Baby Iqbal) cloth diapers stash since we began. I have added few other cloth diapers as well to try their fit and absorbency. Our current stash consists of
  • 6 Flip covers including Twilight, Grasshopper, Butternut, Moonbeam, Clementine and Ribbit! with 15 stay dry inserts *wink*
  • 1 BumGenius! Freetime AIO - love the Albert print!
  • 1 BumGenius! 4.0 - bought the artist series, Eiffel Tower as they are discontinuing the prints
  • 1+1 Charlie Banana - gotta love the royal blue colour! Just bought a red colour :p
  • 1 Bamboolite AI2 Regular - another black with numbers print still on its way hehe
  • 2 Autumnz - in baby blue and green colours :)

As I wanted to start cloth diapering Baby Iqbal for nighttime, I have also bought Bamboolite foldover inserts so I can put them in the Autumnz diapers. Received a good review about it from Rozi. Although few cloth diapering mom here actually use Flip and double the inserts or use the LoopyDo or SuperDo for nighttime diapering. As Baby Iqbal is still small, I do not want his diapers to be bulky. I hope the foldover inserts will not be really bulky for him.

I am looking for other options for ease of use and convenience especially when we go out and about (both short and long trips). Flip is definitely my go to diaper when we are at home during the day. But at night, I'd put him in pocket diapers or AIO. Now I am contemplating whether to buy more pockets or more AIOs. This will be for another post as I have lots to ramble. *wink*

Lets keep going! *big grins* ;)

DPT and Polio jab

Today, Baby Iqbal had DPT first jab and liquid med (polio). After the nurse gave a dropped of polio, he cried so hard. When we told them that Baby Iqbal had prevanar jab last week, they were hesitant to give the DPT shot.

So, they called the Doctor at Paedriatic clicnic, RIPAS to ensure that its okay for them to give the shot. It was okay and made Baby Iqbal cried til his face turned red! Hehe and he was strong! Sekejap saja nangis ;D Didnt made mummy teary pun. Heee

We came home and mom gave him paracetamol - they said the shot will make some babies have fever. He's having his nap while Im writing this. Mommy and Daddy love you Son!
